⁵ Adonijah was David's son. His mother was Haggith. He puffed up his chest. He walked around the palace like he owned it. "I will be king!" He got war chariots. He got horses. He paid fifty men to run in front of him wherever he went. Like he was already king!

¹¹ Nathan heard about the feast. He ran to Bathsheba's house. She was Solomon's mother. "Did you hear the news? Adonijah, son of Haggith, just made himself king! And David does not even know!"

²⁸ King David sat up straight. His voice got strong. "Bring Bathsheba back in here!" She came in. She stood in front of the king.

⁴¹ Adonijah and his guests were just finishing their meal. They heard the sound rolling toward them. Joab's head snapped up. He heard the horn blast! "What is all that noise? Why is the whole city shouting?"
