The Promise Passed On

Jacob splits everything in two. Two groups. If Esau hits one, the other can run. Then he sends gifts ahead — goats, sheep, camels — wave after wave of animals walking toward Esau. Maybe the gifts will cool his brother's anger. Maybe not.

Night falls. Jacob drops to his knees in the dirt. He prays out loud. His voice shakes. "I am afraid of my brother. Please save me. Save my children." He holds on to every promise Yahweh ever made him. He stays there in the dark, waiting.

Jacob sends his wives and children across the river. Cold water splashes their feet. They reach the far side and wait. Jacob stays behind. Alone. He stands by the dark water, listening to it move over the stones. The sky is black above him. No one else is near.
