The Promise Given
The food ran out. The crops turned brown and fell over dead. People went hungry everywhere. Isaac wanted to go to Egypt, the way his father Abraham once did. But Yahweh came to him. "Do not go to Egypt. Stay right here in this land. Stay in Gerar. I will bless you here." So Isaac stayed.
In Gerar, Yahweh spoke to Isaac again. "I will bless you. I will give you all this land, just as I told your father Abraham. Your family will grow until they are like the stars in the sky. Too many to count." The same big promise God made to Abraham now passed to his son. Father to son. The promise...
Men in Gerar saw Rebekah. They asked Isaac, "Who is that beautiful woman?" Fear crawled up Isaac's back. What if they killed him to take her? So he lied. "She is my sister." The same lie his father Abraham once told about Sarah. The very same mistake, passed down like a sickness.
