Kings of Judah

The king sends fifty soldiers to bring Elijah in. Their captain shouts up the hill. Man of God, come down! Elijah calls back from above. If I am a man of God, let fire fall from heaven! Fire roars down from the sky and burns up every single soldier. All fifty. Gone.

Elijah tells Elisha to stay behind. But Elisha will not leave. They walk together to Bethel. Prophets there pull Elisha aside and whisper. Do you know Yahweh is taking your master today? Elisha holds up his hand. Be quiet. I know. His voice is steady, but his eyes are not.

At Jericho, Elijah tells Elisha to stay one more time. Elisha shakes his head. I will not leave you. More prophets whisper the same words. Yahweh is taking him today. Elisha says nothing. The two men keep walking side by side toward the Jordan River.
