David: Kindness and Sin
David asks his men: Is anyone from Saul's family still alive? I made a promise to Jonathan and I want to keep it. A servant tells him about Mephibosheth, Jonathan's son, who cannot walk well — his legs were hurt when he was little. David sends for him. Mephibosheth comes in shaking with fear and...
David calls a servant named Ziba to stand before him. You and your sons will work the fields that once belonged to Saul. Everything they grow will feed Mephibosheth and his family. Ziba bows his head. I will do everything you say, my king.
From that day on, Mephibosheth sits at the king's own table. He eats the same food the king's sons eat. Servants work his land and bring him what he needs. Day after day, year after year, David treats Jonathan's son like family. The promise David made to his dead friend lives on at every meal.
